4.  in the town, just a few who run the Estaminets or Grub shops.  The Tommies all growl at the Canadian, & the Australian, as they say that, since we have arrived the prices have gone up.  There is no doubt about it, the people shove prices up as soon as we arrive & of course poor old Tommy suffers.
Its a great pity as he is a grand chap, taking him all round.  When I arrived at the last billet I had to take them over for the Coy, from one of the Bantam Regs & they are of the best, treated me like a General, not general nuisance neither, I did not feel very well after the march, & turned in early.  They did not issue me with any rations before I set out, & was of course fairly hungry by night.  Just as I was falling asleep, one of them, an officers bat-man, brought me up a plate of soup & a big helping of Roast beef & potatoes, the best tuck in I've had in France.  You say in your letter of the 5th/2/16 that you could not get your, or rather my, pair of socks done in time, well there were four pairs in it & I kept four two & just as well
