Dear Nell,
Received your letter dated 12/3/16, yesterday.  This letter is written under slightly livelier circs than the one you had just answered then.  We have had some rotten weather this last few days, but it is clearing up again.  Its deadly when it is wet., As sure as you step off the duck-boards, you sink to your knees in sticky mud, & you'r lucky if you can get out with your boots on.  Things are much the same as when I last wrote, excepting that a few of our chaps have had the misfortune to have been hit.  The first of the [censored but some legible as follows]:eleventh reinforcements was killed this morning, shot clean through the [indecipherable].  It was [indecipherable] carelessness [indecipherable]  I was talking to him the night before, while he was observing, & repeatedly gave him the tip to keep a bit down, but he never seemed to notice the fact that he was exposed too much.  Anyway he [indecipherable]  We were building a parapet across
