them down wholesale. After we made good the companies followed up, & held the position. After we came out I went round making enquiries about all our lads from up our way. Andy, & Dick both got lightly wounded, & suppose they are in England by this. Sorry to say that Fred & Mick are both missing, but don't say anything unless Mr Smith & John have been notified. No doubt by the time you get this letter they will have been both notified by the authorities. I saw Jack, all unshaven & grimy, but safe, & sound. He was buried once, or twice, but managed to dig out, according to what I could hear, he worked like a trojan. All of our boys have a great contempt for Fritz, as a personal fighter, his artillery is absolutely the only thing that saves him from being walked over. I got a very welcome parcel the first morning we came out, & lost no time in changing my socks, it was like a gift from heaven, expect to get some letter any day now, & you can guess how eagerly we are all looking out for them. It seems quite a long time since we received any, although it is only about a fortnight ago. I have still got Jim Keen's socks, but have not had a chance to pass
