My dear Sir William

I am very busy winding up my affairs, as I start on Saturday.  To night the leading Members of the Melbourne Club give me a farewell dinner, I mention this as I know you will be glad to learn that your old Superindent and friend is held in some respect and esteem by the leading men of the Club.  It is an honour that I could scarcely have hoped for when I landed on the Australian shores, soon after which my introduction from the Colonial Office (through your late brother my much esteemed friend) to you gave me the first step on a ladder which has
