I have used a double whip, which is easier erected than the whim but not so easily worked.  I have also tried a "windpower" with lift & force pump, but the machinery is so apt to get out of repair, and the supply of well water being urgently required every day, it is not so safe to depend upon as the "whim".  I am getting working wooden buckets with a valve at the side closer to the bottom, running upon wire guides, which buckets are self acting both in filling and discharging their contents.  The troughs are made of galvanized iron and from 400 to 600 feet in length.  A well about 100 feet deep (some of mine are 130) with whim, rope, buckets, tank & troughs, costs about £300.  The eighth well is now being sunk on my blocks.  Two years
