The western part of Texas was also very dry and devoid of timber and nearly all this way extent without inhabitants and without stock. The railways are not fenced till the occupied lands are reached. There are strips of alluvial lands on the banks of the Rivers irrigated and under irrigation, the rivers have distant sources in the snowy mountains.
