[Francis Edward De Groot was born in Dublin, Ireland on 24 October 1888. He served in the 15th Hussars (British Army) on the western front in World War I, where he was awarded a ceremonial sword. He became famous when, on Saturday 19 March 1932, he upstaged New South Wales Premier Jack Lang at the opening of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, before a crowd of 300,000 people, cutting the ribbon with that ceremonial sword.][Envelope]F.E.
