Must have given satisfaction, as have been asked several times since to judge dairy cattle, but tho owning dairies for about 40 years, never made a study of dairy stock for points, as written in a book, & would not take it on. Have judged horses as far South as BEGA near VICTORIAN border, & as far North as INNISFAIL in North Qld.

Watched & listened to two old pioneer Scotchmen in the PORT CURTIS district, arguing about the way a stay should be put on a stock yard gate. From the foot up, from the end the hinge was on, or from high up on the hinge and to the foot at other end. Wished they would ask me what a youngster thought, & would have told them a gate required both to keep it from wharping (sic). Must have known something about gates, as Mr Little after riding about my place for two days remarked "This is the only place I have ever been on where all the gates are properly swung". Had about 125 of them with two stays.
