You will be saying you could not hear the whips, nor the dogs. Well none of the men had any idea of cracking a stock whip, not even the Abo, who was the only one who had any idea of stock work. On horseback a whip should be cracked right close up to the horse, & swerved out passing the hind legs, but all these drovers swung it right out wide, & it would curve up under the horses tails. When we did hear their whips they were little louder than striking a match, or a stick cracking. Cattle dogs don't bark either. And Drovers don't crack whips not in Qld. These must have been good hides with horns on, & stuffed with straw, not to break when they bounced on the ground at the bottom of the precipice. A man took risks when he swam on his horse right close to the leaders, if they had started to ring (go round in a circle) would not give much for his chance
