SIR MAURICE OCONNELL the Gov. Resident in GLADSTONE owned RIVERSTONE station, & his brother CARLOS rode over the IVERAGH Gap, & thought he had found a new piece of country, & put up a hut near the big top lagoon. (CARLOS LAGOON to this day), & the owners of Miriam Vale had a job to convince him it was a part of their holding. Mrs GLENNIE of THORNHILL called on LADY O'CONNOR (sic), & was given a cutting of a bush with a pretty pink flower, that LADY O'CONNELL had brought from Sydney. She took great care of it, & it was a great success, & many thousands of scrub wallabies now have a home in the lantana for many miles around. The only noxious weed on Miriam Vale 60 years ago was CIDARETUSA. The ROBERTSONS of TAUNTON were the nearest neighbours an the EAST 21 miles away. They once employed half a dozen KANAKAS, who had a two roomed cottage not far from the house.
