Big Bill had broken in a gelding of his own just before starting, & being by BOTHERATION, he thought it advisable not to leave him spelling till he came back, as the Botherations were noted buck jumpers. He had some high falutin name, which Little Bill did not think appropriate, but reckoned he had a head like a fiddle, so FIDDLE HEAD he was called.

We had lunch near a nice running creek one day, the Sun was shining, & Fiddle Head, being one that had got over the STRANGLES, was not looking too bad, so Bill thought he would take a risk on him, & saddled him up, had a drink at the creek, & splashed some water on the inside of his pants, got a good hold of the near ear, & got on carefully.

But Fiddle Head, tho he may not have heard of SKEWTHORP or of MARTINI, had concluded that buck jumping was hard work, & droving was easy, & the grass was fresh, so
