It was late, & all but JOE COASE sen., had gone to bed. He was very proud of having been the only one up to meet the member, especially as the others had accused him of being a Griffithite. Don't know how many more whiskers it took to put the Griffithite to bed, & do not remember the member coming to sleep in my room, but was wakened at daylight by a man with a black beard coming in, & hitting Mr NORTON (who had a red beard) over the head with a towel, & saying "get up you red wretch". HAWTHORN backed out quick & lively, & afterwards we saw PERRY (a mail contractor) with a long red beard, it was he who was supposed to have slept in.

When we got along THE NARROWS to a little jetty, a most peculiarly dressed man, with a grey beard, & a woman's hat on came aboard; every one secured to know handsome BOB, whom no woman ever succeeded in marrying. His house had been burnt down that night.
