no tea, & we washed the tucker down with drinks at our own expense, then an old HARD HITTER (bowler hat) came round, & we parted with a bob each.

Dont remember hearing any rude remarks, but we must have looked them, as JACK RUSSELL called a meeting soon after, & said, "if that is the way we are going to entertain our visitors it is no use to me". Soon we solved the difficulty by suggesting, that in future everyone should bring their own lunches. We got cricket going at Miriam Vale, & it is my claim to have formed the club about 1889 or 90, & we had a very good team especially in bowling, & we seldom lost a match, going thro a season without loss more than once. After the railway was opened, about 1896, Gladstone cricketers came & had a game with us, & it was one of the few times that Gladstone beat us. We gave them a slap up lunch, & afternoon tea, all hands brought their buggies, & we drove them to the ground about a mile away, shouted them drinks & sent them off in the train at 9PM.
