At LEYBORN the telegraph master, a Mr HARRIS, had been at MIRIAM VALE before my time, & being Queenslanders, he, his wife & daughters, gave me & BIG BILL a right royal welcome.

Rode on to TEXAS to see about the river, & just for something to do stripped, & swam across, it was only about 50 yards across, but running very strong. Was not fool enough to swim straight across, & must have landed 80 yards down.

The then little town of TEXAS was in a mess all right, five cottages all built by the same man stood all right, & most of the two storey pub was there. Just beside it was an ironbark tree, with a fork about 25 feet high, held a woman with a very young baby for about 48 hours.
