but what the "Brass Hats" think, that counts in the matter of decorations. I know if you were a General you would give me half a dozen medals & crosses & things but you, being a dear doting mother, overrate the capabilities of your brave son who perhaps isnt quite so brave in other people's eyes as he is in yours. I'll get a decoration yet though Mater. I'd be awfully pleased to receive one - mostly because I know how proud you'd be of it but believe me I shall be perfectly satisfied if I get back with a whole skin. I have many friends who have never heard a shot fired who have been decorated and others who never get within a couple of miles of the firing line, except for an occasional walk up to the supports about once a week so there is yet a chance for me.
