anything at all almost, is simply agony unless one is lucky enough to own a primus stove over which one may warm one's numb hands every minute or so. It's hard to believe all this I know but it is all the sacred solemn truth, even if it does sound rather tall. But I think we are over the worst of the cold now and our boys have stood it splendidly. In fact some people say they have stood it even better than the Tommies. It is quite surprising how cheery they can be under such conditions. Five days ago the thaw commenced and I really believe that we are now in a worse plight than before. It certainly is not nearly so cold now but we have the mud to contend with.
