I called in at the A.F.C.[Australian Flying Corps] one day to see some pals of mine. I stayed to lunch during which one of my pals asked me if I would care for a flip and of course I didnt stop long to consider what answer to give. So after lunch Harper after a lot of wangling, got permission from his C.O. to take me up. Just before starting they brought out a machine gun and mounted it on the frame behind me and gave me a course of instruction in its use extending over about one minute after which they asked me if I understood it thoroughly. Afraid that I might spoil my chances of a fly if I said no, I said I understood it in detail but mentally wondered what I should do if we encountered a Taube. [German make of aircraft].
