I turned to the Major to see if he would call it off but though he gave me no hope I saw that the prospect to him was not encouraging.  However I had made arrangements to have a bath and being a man of my word and seeing no way of dodging it without being called a ring-tail I sent my servant out with the axe to break sufficient ice to enable me to get in,
