course of veterinary instruction. Well I went along alright but my bad luck again - this offensive started and I had to come back. When I went over to Shoeburyness last March for a 5 weeks' course I had only been there 6 days when I was recalled because of the German offensive. However the few days I did spend down at this Veterinary Hospital were splendid. It is situated at a pretty little spot well behind the lines and before the war it was famed all over the Continent for its mineral water. I am told tourists used to visit if from all over the world Of course all the biggest hotels & parks and the Casino are now used as hospitals and the place is nothing like its pre-war days but to me it was splendid to get down there away from the noise of shells and sights of war. I could borrow a horse any time I wished after the lectures were finished (5 p.m.) and I went for some gorgeous rides. There are two big hospitals (French) there and I met some charming friends amongst the nurses there. Also there were some very nice V.A.D. & W.A.A.C. girls from an English
