finale.  The French are doing as magnificently as ever.  Truly they are brilliant fighters and at the rate things are going at present the war will be over in about 6 months, and we'll all be home in 12.  I am firmly of this belief.  My previous estimations have all gone askew owing to some unforseen eventuality such as the Russian cave-in, the domination of Roumania or the chaotic crumpling up of the Italians - things that one could not bet on.  But its hardly likely that we will have to put up with such severe sets-back again - especially as the Americans are coming along so solidly now.  The Italians have now quite retrieved their good name by repulsing a huge Austro German offensive and driving the enemy back in confusion across the Piave.  Things Russiawards still seem to be in a fearful state despite England's endeavours to straighten things out a bit.  The latest we've heard is that the Bolsheviks have had the audacity to arrest the British embassy in Russia.  We are very much impressed with the Americans.  They're splendid fighters and they can
