better of two evils.  I cant discern a super abundance of genuine patriotism and pure statesmanship in the doings & sayings of most of our politicians - merely selfish ambition and short sighted adventure.  However perhaps I am not in a position to sit in judgement on the brains & organisation & administration of the country so I'll let it go at that.

You ask me what I mean, in one of my letters to you, by "old fairies of yours" and "punting at Maidenhead".  I cant remember the references but I take it that I was referring to your early life in London and I presume you were not wholly without your little affairs of the heart when in your palmy days.  So probably the first remark is in reference to the little fairies who were naturally charmed by your youth & folly.  Punting at Maidenhead was not meant to insinuate that you were in the habit of endeavouring to pick the card at some racecourse, but
