ten and twelve & even sixteen horses could not shift.  We lost many horses and even a man, that were either bogged in the mud or drowned outright and then you tell me I am lucky to be out of Australia.  Well, I believe I would chance even the hardship you have had to suffer out there than put up with conditions obtaining here.  Then about the end of Jan. the rain did cease but instead we got the cold.  When I returned from England I found snow on the ground 18 inches deep which had been frozen as hard as rock.  The shell holes that before were filled with water were covered with ice two feet thick!  My toothpaste, ink, tobacco - everything freezes as hard as a nail and if I leave my shaving water for a few minutes
