The thermometer is now up to about 36° but all the snow that covered the ground and all the ice that covered all the big shell craters & every little hole and rut, is gradually melting and leaving the landscape a shocking mess. If it melted all in one night, say, most of the water would drain off into natural valleys but as the thaw is gradual the melting snow and ice becomes trodden into the torn up ground by all the traffic everywhere with the inevitable consequence - mud, mud, mud, everywhere.
