Nature certainly meant GLADSTONE for Queensland's capital, with the second best harbour in Australia & it would have been central & not in one corner of a vast state like Brisbane. We pulled into a little jetty in AUCKLAND CREEK, lumped our ports up, & put them into a hand cart, like we seen in France, but no dog to help pull it. We followed the cart to the pub (per boot). The METROPOLITAN. A few years after the COMMERCIAL bought an old double buggy for passengers. Then the BLUE BELL was built, & they had what was like a boat on wheels, called 'The LILLY'. Then HARRY McCANN built the GRAND HOTEL, & people asked him what was the use of building a pub out of town. If you are ever too hot in Gladstone, go up onto the balcony of the Grand.
