four hours we vainly endeavoured to shift the bogged vehicle.  It was intensely cold & I had lost all my enthusiasm and nearly all the feeling in any limbs.  Then I lost my temper.  I dismounted the lead driver and mounted myself and sure enough, by mere chance we pulled the wagon clean out of its hole on our second effort.  This was at about 2 am.  When I got back to camp my clothes were in a filthy state.  My tunic, which I was relying on to serve me in Blighty, was unrecognisable as such & my field boots which I had hoped would cause
