My dear Mater

Thank you very much for your letter of 1st Jan which I received a few minutes ago.  The mail previous to this one was sunk I believe.  However so long as we get some of our mail its not quite so bad but it is really a hardship to lose one's mail from home.

Now before I start let me tell you that it is bitterly cold at present and my hands are quite without feeling so if I have to cut this letter a bit short you will understand.  I will go on just as long as I am able to write.

No Mater dear I dont suppose you did have what might be termed a Merry Christmas as Syd had just sailed but Cheer O, dear, the next one will be merrier for us all, Im sure.  I too hope the fighting will be all over before Syd is ready to
