popular.  I found the Battery, fortunately, were out at rest and so of course we were able to make Christmas Day a fairly cheery affair.  The Mess secretary had been busy and had gone in the direction of 3 of the 4 points of the compass in an enthusiastic search for the wherewithal to make the Xmas menu as attractive as circs might permit.  He arrived back with a fine assortment of plum pudding nuts & almonds fruit pate-de-foi-gras jellies whiskey port and other wonderful provender and believe me Christmas Day was no mean affair with us despite the war, cold & other small drawbacks.  We entertained 12 other officers at dinner that day.  The men too had rather a gala day.  We expended something like 700 francs about £25 on
