that I was not only running a good home for strangers, but some of the particular strangers were robbing me, little things were quietly disappearing, with Mother helpless and myself away.  These strange women, changing frequently, were having a high old time at my expense.  I came to the conclusion that it was folly to keep the place going on these lines, but would have certainly postponed matters had I known that Fred was so near or had I dreamt that Mother's end was so near.  One of these days I may be able to sit down and write you a long letter of detail.  To-day my loss appears to be greater than ever.  This morning an old friend rushed to me asking how is Mrs. Smith.  Yesterday in Fred's company I had to reply to the same query.  The previous night at dinner at the Club, the same thing happened before half a dozen fellows at the same table, I had to clear.  And so it goes on.  I am just
