about, cheerfully ignoring the rules of the race and the entreaties of the unfortunate jockeys, taking short cuts here and there and even endeavoured to negotiate some of the contrivances put up for the obstacle race such as the water jump and the wire netting entanglement.  One mule was still putting up a fast finish when the pistol went, starting the next event.  There were other mules again who started off splendidly but when half way on their journey, apparently hearing the laughter of the crowd, decided not to be made fools of and deliberately emptied their riders on to the grass and calmly sauntered back to the Kraal.  Honestly I dont think Jimmy Crowe would have won if his mule hadn't bolted through abject fright.

There were other funny incidents but they'd take much too long to recount.
