we observed a huge white horse outlined by trenches cut into the chalky soil. This phenomenon is supposed to mark the sport where King Alfred & the English won a victory over the Danes.   Soon our journey took us by the course of the River Avon & presently we arrived at Bath. Then on once more for about twenty minutes and we arrived at our destination - Bristol. I mention our by that I mean my destination & that of a mate whom I had picked up at Amesbury. He was going to visit his parents there & took me with him. His mother and father lived at Redland, Bristol
