"Point" or City side & given leave from 2 till 10.30 pm. Thus nearly 2000 soldiers proceeded to tour the town. This was aided by the generosity of the Durban City Corporation who had made the trams and all institutions under their control free to all soldiers. The South African Railways were also available gratis for the soldier tourists. During that first afternoon my mate & I visited the city & suburbs, appreciating the fine public buildings, especially the new Town Hall. We soon found our way down to The Beach, a beautifully laid out and grassed watering place almost alongside the city.
