of Senegal. Our ships travel without lights except front, starboard, and stern lights, no lights being allowed on deck, although smoking is still allowed. The men smoke, they must light matches yet they are not allowed to do so on deck, and not between decks for that is a most serious offence for safety's sake. 

The climate being now cooler, the awnings are taken down again. Two or three times a day the alarm blows and we all rush to our appointed stations on lifebelt parade.

For the past 3 days we have been enforced to wear lifebelts and carry water
