bombs which made a loud report but this was the signal for the infantry.
Line after line of khaki figures emerged from cover & we dashed forward with sun glittering on our bayonets. No sooner were we clear of our cover than the bombardment commenced, the ships guns again shelling well in front of us & our artillery which only came up from the transports the same morning kept up a white surf of sharpnel only fifty yds ahead of us.
In spite of all this preliminary preparation the enemy was waiting ready & we met a perfect storm of rifle & machine gun fire but our men never hesitated a minute. The New Zealanders hurled themselves in a solid way tor towards the enemy. Our line entered one Turkish trench with a rush, bayoneted all there & then passed on into broken ground shooting & stabbing, our own tent mates falling, but not a soul turning back, but I did as it was here they got me.
