& we got out of our trenches & rushed up the next hill with fixed bayonets all the time sending the most awful yells.  We got them out of the way & were on the very top in the trenches we had just taken after pulling the dead Turks out when these shells from the "Lizzie" came at differerent intervals right among us & killed a lot & I was again lucky as the trench just to the right of me & not thirty yds away was blown to bits & all the dirt came all over into our trench.  The navy didn't know we had taken this position as somehow word was not sent down to them & they thought we were turks so we had to sneak back down the hill at a gallop to our late trenches but we managed to bring back two of their machine guns.

As soon as they saw that we were leaving a murderous fire was opened on us & we lost a lot of men. The same night we took the hill for good.

I have a jolly good pair of glasses which I picked up in their trenches & am going to try & hang on to them.
