Dear Mother

Have'nt had any spare time to write before, even this wont be long as I go on guard in an hour's time.

Got to Davenport [Devonport] safely after nine weeks, after rather an exciting trip, as we were chased by a submarine two days, but the Port Nicholson proved to be some goer, as all the transports were signalled to separate & make a run for it as this sub was seen & our old ship was second in port, & the Argyleshire second, but didn't we move through the rough sea & when we were coming through the breakwater I thought she was going ashore as it was dark when we bolted in through the narrow opening.  I wrote to Tom Burke giving himn a description of the trip, he will let you see it, can't be bothered writing it again.

Got a letter from Marjorie Wodwell, must write her some time before going to the Somme.
