Some of the chaps who came in last night were telling us that in some places they were sp separated from the Turks by 30 or 40 yds and barbed wire between the trenches but in today's paper our men and the Ghurkas made a rush in the night & got a lot of the wire out of the way & chased the Turks out, & they lost heavy but took a lot of ground & a lot of prisoners & 150 were sent down to the beach with a guard & on the way down one of the Turks gave some trouble & the whole lot were shot by the guard.
On Friday I got a letter from our base sergeant at Alexandria & he tells me that there are thirty seven letters & some papers waiting for me, & he didn't send them as he wrote on speck & chanced whether I'd even get his letter.
He also told me that there would be heaps of chances of promotions & reckons I'm alright for these stripes because I've seen what it's like at the front, but I would have to be among the reinforcements who are arriving at Alexandria regularly. I don't think I'd like any stripes for I
