S.S. Port Nicholson
A week from Durban

21/11/16

Dear Mother

A few lines to tell you that I am still going strong.

This is not a bad ship & get better "grub" than we did on the first transport I went away in.

We have had a beautiful run so far, with the exception of two days fairly rough water in the "Australian Bight".  Had a good view of the coast all the way down as we stood out about seven miles.

This ship is the Makarini under a new name, & is faster than I thought as her daily run is anything from 280 to 300 miles and we have from 12 oclock to-day to do another 2118 miles so we reach Durban on the 28 Nov. where we stay about thirty six hours for coal and also to wait for the "Benalla" which left the day after we did.  From Durban we go to Capetown where we take a 4.7 gun on board in case we have any fun with submarines.  There are all sorts of rumours going round that there is to be no leave while at Durban, but there is sure
