in woods because Fritz use to bomb the villages at night & no troops would be there, they were all camped in the open. Everything had to be camouflaged to hid from the eyes of the Huns aeroplanes. from our position we overlooked the fine old town of Amiens once the joy of our leaves now being shelled by the Huns although there were no people in the town. Almost every half hour we would hear the report of one of the Huns long range guns & then the explosion & the bricks & dust going up into the air. Some of his shells fell very close to the Cathedral & I am sure it has been hit by some pieces.
We had several mascots with us now including a goat with two kids which had been left behind by the French people, & several dogs our famous dog Jack had been lost during the journey from the North of France to the Somme
