France & by doing so saved many thousands of Frances of machinery. All the wool was got safely away & the boss of the mills thanked the Australians for their help & gave money towards the swimming & boxing competions. Moreover we helped ourselves to his coal, large pieces not dust like we had to put up with from the Army Rations. We helped ourselves out of the gardens to vegetables & had an unheard of luxury of potatoes peeled three times a day. Also lettuces & radishes spring onions almost every day out of the gardens outside of Amiens which the  Army Service had bought up out of the funds of the A.I.F. they were very acceptable & the boys enjoyed these luxuries very much. The men close to Corbie were having even a better time Joe Parker had a cow & the result, fresh milk every day. I heard that cow was afterwards
