on Christmas Day Scotty went on Leave shortly after Xmas & was in Scotland for the New Years Day. Jan 4th 1917. I visited Naoures to see the famous caves that were built in 850. A.D. They are very interesting for the fact that the French people took refuge while a war was on. It has a kind of Dugout for each family, a church & every kind of tunnels one could think of its cut into white chalk. Thousands of visitors names are cut into the chalk so I added my own & then came away. During our stay at the Chateau we spent a quiet time I went & saw several concerts which I enjoyed. Scotty arrived back from Leave just in time to leave with me & the Stretcher Bearers to go back to the Somme & I can tell you I had no wish to go back there the weather was now cold & all the ground
