The boys played plenty of games & football matches, so the days went by & on May 5th while the division were holding their posts I visited the place where we spent our worse time last October Thistle Dump, also High Wood. I was glad to see the soldiers grave which I had fixed up still there & the cross intact in spite of the fact of the railway being alongside. I re-marked the words on the cross again & put it back. The smell of the dead was rather bad just there so I went to High Wood, where the wild flowers looked lovely as if trying to hide the shell holes. The crosses in this wood were very plentiful & some large stone ones had been erected to the memories of the lads who had fallen there, also Divisional Crosses to the memory of units that had been almost wiped out fighting for the Wood.
