Dear Mother
Have just knocked off work for a few hours so I am sending you a few lines to let you know that I am still going good. We are a week out from Capetown & cross the line sometime tonight & reach Daka [Dakar] on Thursday or Friday & Davenport [Devonport} in 10 days further where we hope to reach on or about Christmas Day.
Daka is on the West Coast of Africa where we take a 4.7 gun on board, & where I got those colored birds on my way home last year, and I am going to get some more when we get there.
The old ship has been in complete darkness now, for three nights & will be for the rest of the trip as the skipper is taking no risks with "tin fish". We still have boat drill and the alarm goes at any old time but everyone gets to the boats in good time & [indecipherable].
