Dear Mother
Since I wrote I have had my tonsils out & have still got a pretty sore throat & have got to look after it. I had two days in the hospital but I got full, as I think I've had my share in these places, but I came out a day too soon as the following [day ?] we went miles out & had lessons digging trenches which lasted two & a half good solid days & you should have seen me when arriving home again I was as black as the devil & hadn't shaved for four days, but that's all in the game. We are practically full blown soldiers now & expect to get in among our "cobbers", which are the "Shermans" or the Turks in a very few days; in fact we have started to pack up & the sooner we get there the quicker we shall be back in the land of the "Southern Cross", as I may add, we are going to make no bones about it, & lose no chances.
