so it was easy to read between the lines after a cup of cocoa from the Y.M.C.A. we marched to Racquimhem 10 kilos from St Omer where we were billeted at our usual farm & a good time we had here in spite of the rain. August & sometimes September are usually fine months in this part of the world but this August & the early part of September was simply awful rain almost every day, in fact grave doubts concerning the harvest were held even then a large number of crops in England & France were ruined so it was no wonder that the first part of the Ypres offensive failed. In spite of the wet weather we had our fine days when we were able to enjoy ourselves at various places.
