My dearest Mother It was my wish and intention to have enclosed a few lines to you in the last packet home - but it was more than I was able to accomplish at the time - have therefore taken this, the earliest opportunity to do so - I can hardly express how much pleasure I always experience in perusing your truly kind epistles, and only wish you could send one a little more frequently, but suppose I must not complain, particularly as my communications have of late been so few - however my dear Mother you must not judge me harshly in this matter - I was for a long time so situated that it was a most difficult task to manufacture and get a letter to post - { [?] or here to there is good reason to believe went astray} As you are of course well aware my duties more than occupied my time.
