I would really prefer you did not send me the costume..... but if you do it must not be dispatched under 18 months or more after the arrival of this letter. Should it come sooner you will certainly incur my most grave displeasure - and for all time... I trust you understand all this? I don't mean to be ungracious - but I do really think it the better course to "put you wise" on the matter rather than let you continue to imagine the bestowal of gifts holds any weight with me, or that they are received by my people as meaning merely tokens of friendship. My parents watch these things - & sometimes make me very uncomfortable by their significant remarks.

No, Harry, you ask some very pointed questions re my attitude towards your attentions - & I feel I cannot reply with any amount of satisfaction. I know quite well your affection is true & deep & I'm exceedingly sorry it is so.... In a sense I'm not worth it. My ideas of life are so at varience with yours... I mean my ideas on things that are really worth consideration... And for the present I am reluctant to compromise myself in any way whatsoever..
