Do you remember, when we were walking along towards "Snaefell" one afternoon, you made me a promise I asked you not to send me any further gift; to make the hat you had just previously paid for, be your present to me for your departure. You did promise to forego a further gift until you should send me the costume from Australia. And I trusted and was satisfied.

Now, Harry, I think the toilet set is very beautiful, and I thank you yet again for making me the possessor thereof, but I cannot forget that by sending it you - went back on your word... See here, laddie, to Marie gifts mean absolutely nothing. I like pretty things about me, but nothing of money value in the universe would induce me to remember one incident the more or give one whit more of favour. Candidly, Harry, I should have appreciated your thoughtfulness for me more had you kept your promise rather than have bestowed the gift upon me - beautiful as it is.

I must ask you to respect my wishes in future. Presents of a valuable kind I prefer you not to send me. Letters, yes. Write as often as you please - but do not make me presents... the very fact of my accepting
