My dear Cousin
I feer me I am starting this rather late in the day for it to prove much of a letter.
I intended to write earlier on but upon accompanying mother to the chicken-pen we discovered one of her chicks lying stiff with cold. We brought it indoors & for the last half-hour or so have been nursing it - but it died in my hands whilst I endeavoured to give it some warm milk.
Well, Harry, I'm not to clear on the subject as to what I'm to compile this missive now I have started it... Mother wrote you this afternoon & would tell all local news no doubt... Perhaps a little more than is strictly accurate too, on some subjects. Honestly, Harry, never yet have I personally experienced any message whatever for her to send, either to you or your people, at any time when she has been writing.
