[Page 31]

congratulate you, laddie, from the bottom of my heart.

So Ellis is getting a bit funny, is he? Why doesn't he get married himself? - instead of preashing. You say he must not know our relationship, I don't see why he shouldn't. Of course, I understand you'd prefer he, or anyone, did not know that to a certain degree I'd turned you down, still - I can't acknowledge feeling flattered that anyone should think me so anxious to be married at all... But there, it doesn't matter one way or the other really. I know I'm a bit of a fanatic in my ideas of love & marriage generally... We'll say no more about it.... Fate decides all things.

No, my dear, I see nothing in any of your letters since your return that approaches vulgarity - nor aught for which you ned to ask forgiveness... If you imagine there is anything to be forgiven I forgive freely, but I could not pick it out.... Rest assured I enjoyed your visit here immensely. You are young, of the opposite sex and so quite naturally draw me out a bit. I had an excellent time and found you nothing but the nice, kind, anxious to please laddie I've always thought you to be... Never fear, both mother & I, all of us in fact; are greatly pleased whenever we hear of your coming to us.

I found your polish for boot - & cloth soon after our return to the house. You must have been absent-minded when you packed up, too. I laughed when I read of you smelling the thimble, you foolish boy!
