[MS 174]

Will you give my love to Mrs. Jamieson and tell her I called on her friend, who received me very kindly - and was very well - You would hear from Rio that poor Mr. Short died before we arrived at Cape Horn - Elizabeth and Charles had the measles at sea after we left Rio - Mrs [Horntree?] had the small pox at Rio and my Mary was inoculated for the Cow pox which she had very favorably - poor Tristan ran away at Rio three weeks before we sailed and we could not hear of him - I was very sorry for him but we had a great deal of trouble with him  spirits was so cheap that he was constantly tipsy - and his master punished him and he went off if he could be found Mr Marsden directed him if opportunity offered to be sent out to New South Wales and work at the Farm - I am greatly afraid he may never do any good for himself ----
